Independent software engineer & technical architect
A personal introduction

Hi, I'm Nick.

I'm an independent software engineer and technical architect with over 20 years of experience building websites, e-commerce platforms, and business applications.

Over the years, I've worked with everything from custom PHP and WordPress to enterprise applications built with ASP.NET MVC, Razor, and Kendo UI. I've been involved in projects of all sizes, from building new platforms to improving complex systems that businesses depend on every day.

What I enjoy most is solving problems. Sometimes that means building something from scratch. Other times, it's figuring out why an existing system isn't working the way it should, simplifying a complicated process, or finding a better way to approach a technical challenge.

I run Ascendo Solutions independently. That means when you hire me, you're working directly with me—not a salesperson, project manager, or someone handing your project off to another developer.

I believe in clear communication, being straightforward about what's possible, and taking responsibility for the work I deliver. I'm comfortable working independently, but I also enjoy collaborating with designers, developers, and business teams.

At the end of the day, I want to build things that work well, solve real problems, and make life a little easier for the people using them.

Let’s talk about your project
Beyond the technical skills

What it’s like to work with me.

I want you to know where things stand.
Technical work is easier to move forward when everyone understands what's happening. I listen, ask questions, and explain the options in plain language. If something changes or a decision needs your input, I want you to hear about it early.
If I take something on, I follow through.
I know people are planning their own work around mine. I keep them informed, speak up when there's a problem, and stay involved in getting it resolved. Being dependable is as much about how I handle a difficult moment as how I handle a straightforward task.
I don't believe in making things more complicated than they need to be.
I've worked with enough systems over the years to know that the most sophisticated solution isn't always the best one. I prefer approaches that are practical, maintainable, and appropriate for the project.
I like figuring out why something isn't working.
Sometimes the first explanation isn't the whole story. I enjoy following a problem through the code and the systems around it, questioning assumptions, and understanding the cause before deciding what to change.
I enjoy working things out with other people.
Designers, developers, marketers, and business teams each see a different part of the problem. I like bringing those perspectives together, sharing what I know, and learning from the people around me. The work goes better when we can ask questions and give each other honest feedback.
